Religious Education

Religious Education, as part of the Church's mission of evangelisation, shares in the task of spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Primary Religious Education curriculum aims to assist students to make sense of life in the light of God's revelation. It is our task as Christian educators to help our students access the Word of God in the Scriptures, the Church's living Tradition, and in their own lives and experience. In so doing, we prepare our students to celebrate and respond to God's Word in their living.
English
In English, students learn to read, write, talk and listen. They learn about English language and literature, how language varies according to context and how to communicate to a range of audiences for different purposes. They learn to read for information and for pleasure. They learn about poetry, novels and plays. They gain a sound grasp of language structures, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
Supporting your child’s learning
READING
Learning to read is a complex process. For children to read well, they need to develop a range of reading strategies. Reading and writing are closely connected. When children learn to read and write, they learn about how language is used for different purposes and different audiences.
SPELLING
Spelling is valued in our society. Teachers aim to help children understand that spelling correctly helps to communicate meaning. At school, spelling is taught as children learn to read and write. Children develop confidence when they `have a go' at spelling words in their writing. Learning to spell is a complex process which takes place over the stages of schooling.
TALKING AND LISTENING
Children develop confidence using spoken language as they learn to talk and listen for different purposes. Talking enables children to clarify their ideas, explore issues, solve problems and to develop understandings in all Key Learning Areas.
WRITING
Reading and writing are closely connected. When children learn to read and write, they learn how literary and factual texts are written for different purposes and different audiences. In writing, children learn about the structure and grammar of written language as well as learning about handwriting and spelling.
Mathematics
Mathematics develops students’ thinking, understanding, competence and confidence with numbers, shapes and measurement. Students learn to add, subtract, divide and multiply whole numbers, fractions and decimals. They learn to measure time and calculate with money. They learn geometry, algebra and how to work with data and graphs.
Science and Technology
Science and Technology develops students’ skills in thinking, investigating and problem-solving. It gives them knowledge and skills in scientific investigation, design and applied technology. This subject builds on the curiosity children have about their natural and built environments.
Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)
In Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) students learn about history, geography, civics and citizenship. They investigate their personal and community identity, and gain an understanding of their nation and its place in the world. They learn to participate effectively in maintaining and improving the quality of their society and environment.
Creative and Practical Arts
Our school will teach all students the visual arts, music and drama. These activities are planned and presented in keeping with the interests and capabilities of each student, to encourage appreciation, self expression, technical competence and creativity. All students have opportunities to perform before an audience in one or more of the art forms. All students are provided with opportunities to manipulate a variety of materials, and to use tools and imple ments according to their needs, interests and abilities.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
We teach all students to develop an active and healthy lifestyle. The children are provided with knowledge about themselves and with opportunities to develop skills in interpersonal relationships. With the school curriculum there is regular provision for physical activity in areas such as sport, dance and other forms of physical exercise.
